In 1984, Grover Jackson created the Soloist as an evolution of the Superstrats popular among his line of Charvel guitars.
Whereas Charvel was known for its somewhat more traditional, Strat-inspired construction, shape, and feel, the Soloist featured a neck-through construction, deeper cutaways, an uncommonly thin neck, and a 12- to 16-inch compound radius ebony fingerboard. In other words, everything about the Soloist was purpose-built for maximum sustain, enhanced upper-fret access, and lightning-fast, virtuosic playing.
As a testament to the success of the metal-focused design, the Soloist found its way into the hands of many noteworthy heavy players including Gary Moore, Iron Maiden’s Adrian Smith, Slipknot’s Mick Thomson, and Def Leppard’s Phil Collen.
These Jackson Custom Shop Tangent Series Soloists were born from an exclusive collaboration between Jackson and Sweetwater, working closely with the Custom Shop’s luthiers to craft an imaginative homage to the ethos of heavy-hitting 1980s models, incorporating select contemporary appointments to meet the demands of today’s players.
Available in an array of finishes that include iconic Jackson colors — over and under black — in evocative degrees of relic’d style, as well as NOS black and white options, the Soloist’s modern features comprise stainless steel frets, a matched-finish reverse headstock, push-pull coil splitting for a broader range of tones, and Bare Knuckle Holydiver humbuckers, which provide a progressive, modern sound with a wide dynamic range.
As a finishing touch, these guitars come with a heavy relic that visually evokes a lifetime of touring and gives each guitar a worn-in feel similar to a comfortable favorite pair of jeans. And since each guitar is relic’d by hand, no two are the same, ensuring a truly one-of-a-kind instrument.
